The
Archives of the Estate of David Smith comprise records and materials
left in the artist's studio at the time of his death, including
sketchbooks, notebooks, lecture notes and writings, personal and
professional correspondence, press scrapbooks, studio records, biographical
photographs and documents, exhibition catalogues, press clippings
and art periodicals. The Archives also houses a comprehensive photographic
record of the creation and installation of Smith's work at Bolton
Landing and in Voltri, Italy, taken by the artist himself and in
collaboration with the photographers Dan Budnick, Ugo Mulas and
Alexander Liberman.
Most of this material,
collectively known as the David Smith Papers, was formerly on deposit
at the New York office of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian
Institution, where it still may be viewed on microfilm by permission
of the Estate. For further information about consulting the David
Smith Papers and other archival documents relating to the artist
in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, please contact
the Archives of American Art www.aaa.si.edu.
The Estate continues to
supplement its archival collections and add to its library of published
and unpublished written and visual materials relating to the artist's
life, work exhibitions, critical reception, and his relations with
his artistic coevals. The Estate's goal is to create a comprehensive
repository of information that will encourage and support continued
interest, interpretation and appreciation of his work and its role
in the development of twentieth-century modernist art. Researchers
who wish to consult the microfilmed papers at the Archives of American
Art or who need to view specific original documents housed at the
Estate office, should contact
